Mary lives in western New York State with her husband Frank. She began writing poetry at the age of 50. In 2006, after a career of over thirty years, she retired from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and in that same year discovered haiga. It is now her main creative focus. In addition, she enjoys photography, enhancing her photos, and taking online courses. An active member of the AHA Poetry forum, Mary has been published in Haigaonline and has her own web site at

The photos for these haiga were taken on a family visit to California. The remarkable crawling trees are a planting of Australian Tea Tree (Leptospermum laevegatum) and Pink Nesophila (Melaleuca nesophila) in Palisades Park, Santa Monica.
