Peter Lax is one of the giants of modern mathematics. Born in Budapest, he emigrated to the US in 1941 and received his education at New York University where he is now professor emeritus. He has won many awards, including the 2005 Abel Prize in Norway. This poem is his first venture and so far only into haiku. For more about the haiku and the haiga, click here.
