Ray was inspired by haiku after photographing the Kurimoto Japanese Garden near his home in Edmonton, Canada and searching for Asian genre poetry to supplement the images. He is managing editor of contemporary haibun online and haibun editor of the World Haiku Review. In his previous life as a university professor, one of his fields was business management and the environment, an interest that still informs his art and poetry. Ray's haiku, haibun and haiga have been published in Heron's Nest, Contemporary Haibun (print journal), contemporary haibun online, Simply Haiku, the World Haiku Review, tiny words and Haiku Harvest.
