Picton, New Zealand

Ernie has been writing haiku for a very long time and is widely published. He has won awards in international competitions, including in Japan. At home, he has done much to promote haiku in New Zealand by organizing local poetry groups, school workshops and workshops by established poets from abroad. He is the co-author with an'ya of Haiku Wine, (Natal Light, 2003). With New Zealand photographer Graeme Matthews he also co-authored a coffee table book, a raindrop, a flowing river, 2003). In 2002 Stylus Poetry Journal published an interview with him by Patricia Prime. He was also the subject of a feature in World Haiku Review, 'Tasting Vintage Haiku' (July 2002).

It has been said of Ernie's haiku that its charm lies in the author's sense of humor and his appreciation of the absurdity of life. As you will see from this portfolio, the same goes for Ernie's haiga, which are executed with ink, paint and charcoal in a style that blends an abstract expressionist style with the spare aesthetic of traditional haiga.
