BIOGRAPHY of ORIGA (Olga Hooper)

I was born in Siberia, Russia. Graduated from Tyumen State University with a master's degree with honors in history and social sciences, and from post-graduate school with a written thesis in Russian history. For many years I have been a teacher in colleges and universities. Since 1998 after marriage to an American man, I have lived in Michigan, USA with my husband, two cats, and our children and grandchildren. About 1.5 years ago, I encountered Japanese culture for myself, and now I am a devoted student of sumi-e, haiku, ikebana, shakuhachi and koto music, Japanese literature, and Japanese cuisine. My works have been published in Simply Haiku magazine, 2003 #5(, and 2004 V.2 #2 (; in Green Leaf web site where I have my personal Photo Gallery ( --haiga in collaboration with Ashe Wood; my haiga will also be published in upcoming 2004 issue of "Reeds: Contemporary Haiga" (editor Jeanne Emrich); in upcoming issue of "Hermitage" -- a new magazine of Ion Codrescu, and other magazines . In January and in February 2004, I was among the winners of the World Haiku Association Haiga contest ( and ( I am a member of the World Haiku Club, World Haiku Association, and Haiku Hut Poetry Forums. I also cooperate with Russian haiku groups and associations, and contribute my haiku and paintings to Russian magazines and anthologies. My most recent accomplishment is First Place plus an Honorable Mention at the Kaji Aso Studio International Haiku Contest 2004. The link to their Web site is:
