Red Seal Series

Ancient Chinese characters have always fascinated me with their origins as pictures and symbols. With this latest series I wanted to create something that was all handmade with watercolour paper and traditional ink. I painted a red block with different textures and then stamped it on the paper so I could add other elements when it dried. The characters, or “kanji” in Japanese, were selected to represent an element from my haiku. Both the kanji and my own haiku were painted with my own expressive calligraphy. Very much a mixture of traditional and modern elements in an experimental style that I enjoyed very much.
