"FUN IN THE SUN" BY ADELAIDE B. SHAW

Adelaide lives in Millbrook NY, which infuses her haiku and haiga with a vision of small-town life that for many of us now exists in memory. At the same time, she renders these scenes with a warmth of observation and precision of language that comes from the viewpoint of wider experience: she was born in Connecticut, grew up in Los Angeles, and lived in Geneva, Switzerland while her husband worked for the United Nations; then, returning to the US, she worked as a school principal's assistant, then a legal assistant while living in the suburbs of New York.

She began writing haiku in the early 1970's and gradually added senryu, haibun, tanka and, three years ago, photo haiga. She is widely published and has won awards internationally.

More recently has come an involvement with photo haiga, using as she says her husband's camera. "I take pictures of whatever interests me and later edit until I have a focal point. The haiku comes second. For some, the haiku comes immediately; for others months may pass before I have something that goes beyond mere description of the scene." Her haiga are published at Daily Haiga, Haigaonline and Simply Haiku. More may be read on her blog, White Petals.
