DETELINA TIHOLOVA

This past October, Detelina exhibited her haiga in an exhibition, “Haiga, haiku, sumi-e” at the Gallery of Art "1908" in Sofia Bulgaria. Included in the display were sumi-e and zen painting, haiga and collages with handmade paper. "Haiga is unknown in Bulgaria," she writes. "It [the exhibition] aimed to popularize haiga and sumi-e. This type of art gathers poets and artists."

Detelina has been writing haiku since 1992, haiga since 2003. We met her in 2005 when she sent us a portfolio of photo haiga.

Now, it's been our pleasure to get to know her ink brush paintings. Like her photographic work, they depict the rural landscapes of Bulgaria, in their seasonal weather patterns and human occupations.

We hope you enjoy this selection of haiga from the show. Many thanks to Maya Lyubenova for her English translations of the poetry.
