CHALLENGE: SONGS FROM THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD

What did you sing when you were young? In our challenges, we've usually given everyone a few kigo to jumpstart the creativity, but this time we left the season open and asked for a topic to encourage multisensory thinking.

We wanted you to write your own memories and experiences of the songs you remember from growing up: cradle songs, counting songs, the tuneless chants of hopscotch and jump rope, campfire songs, songs that were popular at an important time in your life. . .

Enjoy the haiga you've sent us in response! Several of you sent explanations we thought were so interesting that we've included them, too.

Susan Constable dared me to figure the songs in hers out for myself. I did—can you? As for Pris Campbell, we hoped she'd use her nostalgic collection of 1950s high school photographs, and she did not disappoint. In the four from Pris, your challenge is to spot her.

Finally, don't forget to check the Submissions link on our sidebar for information about our December Haiga Challenge, which will revive an old tradition here at Haigaonline: Family Haiga!
